Abstract

This study aims to analyze consumptive lifestyle patterns and their implications for financial management among university students. The increasing influence of social trends, digital technology, and accessible financial services has affected students’ spending behavior and financial decision-making. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with university students from different financial backgrounds, including those financially supported by parents and those earning independent income through work. The findings indicate that students financially supported by their parents tend to spend more on food, online shopping, beauty products, and leisure activities, with purchasing decisions often influenced by social media trends and fear of missing out (FOMO). In contrast, working students prioritize tuition fees, daily necessities, savings, and emergency funds because they have greater awareness of the effort required to earn income. Although both groups frequently use e-wallets, digital payment services increase the risk of impulsive spending when not accompanied by adequate self-control. The study also found that financial management is influenced not only by income sources but also by self-control, financial awareness, saving habits, and the ability to distinguish between needs and wants. The study concludes that consumptive lifestyle patterns have significant implications for students’ financial management and highlight the importance of financial awareness in maintaining financial stability.
