Abstract

This study analyzes the types of swear words and the social values reflected in the dialogue of Venom 3: The Last Dance. The topic is significant because swear words in films do not merely operate as offensive expressions; they may also reveal emotions, interpersonal relations, and the psychological pressure experienced by characters. A descriptive qualitative design was applied. The data consisted of film dialogues containing swear words, collected through documentation by repeatedly watching the movie, checking subtitles, recording relevant utterances, and classifying them using Pinker's typology of swear words and Schwartz's theory of social values. The findings identified 25 utterances containing swear words. Three categories appeared: 14 cathartic swear words, 9 abusive swear words, and 2 emphatic swear words, while dysphemistic and idiomatic swear words were not found. The social-value analysis identified security in 15 data, power in 7 data, conformity in 2 data, and benevolence in 1 data. Security was the most dominant value because most utterances occurred in situations involving threats, danger, panic, and uncertainty. The findings indicate that swearing in the film is primarily a spontaneous pragmatic response to emotional and situational pressure rather than a simple marker of impoliteness. Thus, swear words function as meaningful linguistic signs that express emotion, intensify meaning, and reflect social values within cinematic interaction.
