Abstract

Writing is a challenging skill for EFL learners, especially in developing ideas, organizing content, and applying appropriate vocabulary and grammar. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Four Square Writing Method in improving students’ writing ability in recount texts and to describe classroom conditions during its implementation. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted based on Burns’ (2009) model through two cycles involving planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The participants were 28 eighth-grade students of SMPN 18 Surakarta. Data were collected through writing tests, classroom observations, interviews, field notes, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Miles and Huberman’s (1994) interactive model. The findings showed that students’ mean scores increased from 63.78 in the pre-test to 68.78 in Post-test I and 77.25 in Post-test II. The method also improved students’ writing aspects and created a more active learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between students’ interaction with the Memrise application and vocabulary mastery among tenth-grade students at SMAN Colomadu in the 2025/2026 academic year. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 32 students from Class X-8 selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a 24-item questionnaire to measure students’ interaction with Memrise and a 37-item multiple-choice test to assess vocabulary mastery. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25. Since the data were not normally distributed, Spearman’s rank-order correlation was applied to test the hypothesis. The results showed a significant positive correlation between students’ interaction with the Memrise application and vocabulary mastery (rₛ = .482, p = .005), indicating a moderate relationship. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. The findings indicate that higher interaction with Memrise is associated with better vocabulary mastery and supports the potential use of mobile-assisted language learning for English vocabulary development.
