Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Japanese occupation history learning through visual media based on a contextual approach in Grade XI at SMA Negeri 11 Medan. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews with history teachers and Grade XI students, and documentation, including teaching modules, learning media, and classroom activities. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was strengthened through source triangulation and member checking. The results show that learning was conducted through several stages: apperception using maps, presentation of images and documentary photographs, screening of short videos, group discussions, guiding questions, and conclusion drawing. The visual media used included maps, documentary photographs, infographics, short videos, historical figure images, and interactive maps. These media increased students’ attention, motivation, understanding, and participation. The contextual approach appeared in the teacher’s efforts to relate Japanese occupation materials to students’ family experiences, surrounding environment, community service activities, school rules, and daily social values. The obstacles included limited projectors, unstable electricity, weak internet access, limited preparation time, and technical constraints in media development. The teacher addressed these problems by downloading videos, using printed images, borrowing the multimedia room, and learning to create simple media independently.
