Abstract

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21). This additional chromosome results in the overproduction of certain proteins, which can disrupt normal body growth and development and affect the development of the nervous system, particularly the brain. This case study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a physiotherapy intervention combining Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) and Sensory Integration in improving motor abilities in children with Down syndrome. Assessments were conducted on two children aged 6 and 8 years using the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) dimensions B, D, and E, along with sensory function and range of motion examinations. The evaluation results demonstrated significant improvements following the intervention, particularly in gross motor function and postural stability. In conclusion, the combination of Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) and Sensory Integration was shown to be effective in supporting motor development in children with Down syndrome. This exercise program can also be implemented independently at home under parental supervision as part of an ongoing rehabilitation program.
