Abstrack Background: Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) is a condition commonly experienced by the elderly, which can reduce quality of life, increase the risk of falls, and impair cognitive function. Several factors are suspected to contribute to the occurrence of EDS in older adults, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and sleep disorders. Aim: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between BMI, waist circumference, and sleep disorders with the incidence of EDS among elderly individuals in the working area of UPTD Puskesmas Kotakaler, Sumedang Regency. Methods: This quantitative study employed a descriptive correlational approach with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of all elderly individuals registered in the working area of Puskesmas Kotakaler (n = 3,349), with a sample of 346 elderly selected using accidental sampling. Anthropometric measurements were used to assess BMI and waist circumference, while the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to evaluate EDS and sleep disorders, respectively. The results of this study are expected to provide a basis for early detection and intervention regarding the risk of EDS among the elderly. Results: The study found a very weak but statistically significant correlation between BMI and EDS (r = –0.111; p = 0.041), indicating that higher BMI was associated with a slight decrease in EDS levels among the elderly. However, waist circumference (r = –0.078; p = 0.148) and sleep disorders (r = 0.003; p = 0.957) were not significantly correlated with EDS, showing very weak and non-significant associations. Conclusion: Among the factors studied, BMI had a significant relationship with the incidence of EDS in the elderly, although it does not act as a factor that increases EDS occurrence. Waist circumference and sleep disorders were not significant factors. Therefore, continuous monitoring of nutritional status, along with the implementation of a healthy lifestyle and good sleep habits, is necessary to minimize the risk of EDS in older adults.
