Abstract

Based on the 2018 South Kalimantan Province Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) report, there are 43.62% of the population in Banjar Regency who experience dental and oral health problems. In addition, dental and oral health problems were also found in 10.74% of junior high school students, who experienced problems such as cavities and tartar. This study aims to determine the relationship between chewing habits and calculus buildup in eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Martapura, Banjar Regency. The method used was an analytical survey with a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 51 respondents using a total sampling technique. Then analyzed using the Pearson Chi-Square test.The results showed that respondents who had a habit of chewing on both sides of the jaw (43.1%) tended to have a good calculus index (70.0%). Meanwhile, those who had a habit of chewing on one side of the jaw (56.9%) had a moderate calculus index (51.6%).The study concluded that there is a relationship between chewing habits and calculus buildup in eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Martapura, Banjar Regency. It is recommended that respondents practice chewing using both sides of their jaws equally and maintain good oral hygiene to prevent calculus buildup.
