Abstract

Historically, cohabitation in Indonesia has been highly taboo, deeply intertwined with theological values and social norms. However, the rise of digital spaces has shifted private boundaries into the public sphere, triggering significant value negotiations. This study examines these moral negotiations by analyzing netizen comments on cohabitation following influencer Vito Sinaga’s appearance on the @CurhatBangDenny Sumargo podcast. Using virtual ethnography and Foucauldian critical discourse analysis, the research explores how digital interactions function as discursive practices that shape netizen subjectivity. The analysis focuses on mechanisms of 'digital surveillance' and 'moral courts' used to discipline behavior deemed deviant. Findings indicate that while traditional moral rejection remains dominant, new rationalizations have emerged, viewing cohabitation as a pragmatic 'trial and error' phase before marriage. This research contributes to understanding digital spaces as arenas of contestation between social conservatism and contemporary lifestyles. Ultimately, the comments section serves as a venue for 'moral judgment' where taboo boundaries are tested. The study concludes that while traditional hegemony remains strong, digital spaces create openings for counter-discourses that challenge the existing sociocultural construction of morality in Indonesia.
