Abstract

This study examines the development of the use of Janur Kuning leaves in the wedding traditions of the people of Lubuk Aman Village, Lubuklinggau City, South Sumatra, in the modern era. The study aims to analyze the changes in the use of Janur Kunin leaves from natural materials such as young coconut leaves to imitation materials and to identify efforts to preserve cultural values in local traditional wedding traditions. The study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The results show that the use of yellow coconut leaves has undergone a transformation from a sacred symbol made from natural materials with collective meaning to a decorative ornament made from imitation materials that emphasizes aesthetics and economic efficiency. This change is influenced by the limited availability of young coconut trees in urban areas, increasing manufacturing costs, the influence of social media, and the weakening transmission of traditional knowledge between generations. Nevertheless, some indigenous communities and local cultural figures still strive to maintain the symbolic value of yellow coconut leaves through various forms of cultural adaptation. This research is expected to contribute to the development of local historical studies on the dynamics of wedding traditions in South Sumatra.
