Abstract

Introduction: Biodiversity is an important concept in biology learning that requires understanding not only theoretically, but also contextually through its connection to the real environment. However, biodiversity learning is still often oriented towards textbooks, thus lacking meaningful learning experiences. The use of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) as a contextual learning medium is an innovative alternative because it allows students to learn plant variations, classifications, and benefits directly through the surrounding environment. This study aims to analyze the use of TOGA as a contextual learning medium in improving understanding of the concept of biodiversity. Methods: This study used a literature study method with a qualitative descriptive approach through the PRISMA-based Systematic Literature Review (SLR) framework. Data were obtained from scientific articles relevant to the topics of TOGA, contextual learning, biodiversity literacy, and environment-based biology learning published in 2021–2026. The literature selection process was carried out through the stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion, resulting in 22 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis used content analysis techniques to produce a synthesis of the context of TOGA integration in biology learning. Results and Discussion: The results of the study indicate that TOGA has the potential as a contextual learning resource that allows for morphological observation, plant classification, analysis of medicinal plant benefits, and understanding of biodiversity conservation. The contextual learning approach has been proven to improve biodiversity literacy, observation skills, and active student involvement. Conclusion: The use of TOGA as a contextual learning medium can improve understanding of biodiversity concepts in a more meaningful way and support innovative, contextual, and sustainable biology learning.
