Abstract

Live transportation of fish seed under high density and prolonged travel duration remains a major challenge in aquaculture due to increased metabolic activity, oxygen consumption, water quality deterioration, and mortality risk. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of turmeric extract as a natural anesthetic for Dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus) seed transportation by assessing behavioral responses and survival performance. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with four treatments, namely 0, 5, 10, and 15 mL turmeric extract per 5 L water, with three replicates for each treatment. A total of 600 fish were transported for eight hours, and behavioral score, behavioral index, recovery time, water quality, and survival rate were evaluated. The 5 mL/5 L treatment produced the most stable mild sedation, maintaining body balance, operculum movement, and rapid recovery after transportation. The survival rate was highest in this treatment (98.67 ± 1.15%), followed by 10 mL/5 L (94.00 ± 2.00%), 15 mL/5 L (90.00 ± 2.00%), and control (88.00 ± 2.00%). Turmeric extract at 5 mL/5 L is a promising natural anesthetic alternative for improving Dumbo catfish seed transportation efficiency, although further validation under different transport conditions is required
