Abstract

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the fishery commodities that has developed over time and has a high economic value. The success of aquaculture is closely related to optimal environmental conditions for the survival and growth of the cultivated fish. In a closed system, fish produce waste from metabolic processes that can gradually reach toxic levels. The aim of this study is to reduce the consumption of freshwater and minimize the environmental impact of the waste produced. The research was conducted from May 1 to June 30, 2025, at the Aquaculture Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture Indragiri Islamic University. The study employed an experimental method using a completely randomized design consisting of three treatments and three replications. The treatments included using gravel and sand filter materials covered with gauze, using dacron cotton, and not using a filter as a control. Nile tilapia fry were each placed in aquariums measuring 3-4 cm at a density of 15 fish. The parameters analyzed included growth, survival rate, and water quality. The research results indicate that the aquaculture recirculation system provides the best outcomes for the growth and survival of nile tilapia fry. The treatment using gravel and sand resulted in an absolute weight growth of 0.440±0.02 g, an absolute length of 0.95±2.22 cm, and a survival rate of 100±0.00%. The water quality parameters for the treatment using gravel and sand showed favorable conditions with a temperature of 26 ºC, pH of 7.4, dissolved oxygen level of 5.26 ppm, and ammonia concentration of 0.6 ppm. These water quality indicators suggest that the water conditions are normal and support the health of nile tilapia fry.

Abstract

This study aims to identify fisheries resources in the waters of Kateman, which is one of the coastal areas with unique ecological characteristics. This region is known as a center for traditional capture fisheries that still maintains a local wisdom-based fishing system. Kateman features estuarine, pelagic, demersal, and benthic waters. The waters of Kateman have relatively high turbidity due to sediment supply from rivers and strong tidal activities. The presence of a mangrove ecosystem along the water's edge provides protection and spawning grounds for various species of fish, shrimp, and shellfish. The study employs a purposive sampling method, which is a deliberate sampling technique that selects subjects with specific criteria relevant to the study's objectives. A descriptive method is used to describe or portray the characteristics and identification in a factual and accurate manner. Meanwhile, a qualitative method focuses on understanding the meanings, experiences, and perceptions of individuals or groups about fishermen in depth. Based on the data from the identified catches of fishermen in the waters of Kateman, there are 24 species of fish, 3 species of bivalves, and 7 species of crustaceans with notable abundance and biodiversity. These species dominate the area and exhibit wide tolerance to changes in salinity, making it a habitat rich in marine resources. This diversity is vital not only for the local ecosystem but also for the economic sustainability of fishermen who rely on marine resources. The fishermen's catch data indicates that the composition of the catch is dominated by estuarine, pelagic, demersal, and benthic fish species that hold significant economic value for coastal communities. Variations in the types and quantities of catches reflect the influences of oceanographic conditions, fishing seasons, and the characteristics of the fishing gear used by local fishermen. This data also mirrors the level of intensive utilization of fisheries resources, highlighting the need for sustainable management practices to maintain the ecological balance of the waters and the livelihoods of fishermen in the Kateman area.

Abstract

The training is designed to introduce students to the concept of utilizing fish waste as an alternative protein source, while also providing direct hands on experience in the feed production process using engineering technology commonly applied in small to medium scale feed industries. The practical method uses a participatory training approach and an engineering technology approach by utilizing production equipment such as a feed making machine and a grinder to process fish waste raw materials, producing feed with uniform shape and size. This training is carried out in three main stages: the delivery of theory, instructor demonstrations and independent student practice. This method is applied so that students not only understand the concepts theoretically, but also are able to apply them directly. Fish waste based feed production technique training successfully improved the knowledge and skills of students in the Aquaculture Study Program, Indragiri Islamic University. Fish waste has significant potential as a feed ingredient with a protein content of 18–22%, and after formulation it reaches 28–32%. The production process using engineering technology (pelletizer) produces high quality pellets that are homogeneous and water resistant for up to 25 minutes. The students training capability is demonstrated by improvements in post-test scores knowledge of nutrition increased from 50% to 90%, feed formulation increased from 40% to 95%, and the ability to operate the equipment increased from 25% to 100%. The implementation of this simple technology can reduce feed production costs by 30–40% compared to using commercial feed.
