Abstract

The use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) as a digital payment system has continued to grow in Indonesia. However, its implementation in traditional markets remains suboptimal, as many traders still prefer cash transactions. This study aims to analyze the forms of resistance among food traders toward the use of QRIS, identify the factors shaping such resistance based on the dimensions of Consumer Resistance to Innovation, and examine the influence of cash payment preferences among Generation X and Baby Boomer consumers on traders’ resistance at Pasar Jaya Cibubur. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The informants consisted of four food traders and four consumers from Generation X and Baby Boomer groups. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis was further supported by data visualization using NVivo 15. The findings reveal that traders’ resistance to QRIS tends to take the form of postponement adoption rather than outright rejection of digital payment innovation. Such resistance is influenced by usage barriers, value barriers, risk barriers, tradition barriers, and image barriers, with the tradition barrier emerging as the most dominant factor. In addition, the preference for cash transactions among Generation X and Baby Boomer consumers was found to reinforce traders’ resistance to QRIS adoption. The study concludes that traders’ resistance reflects an adaptive response to consumer characteristics and the traditional market environment rather than a rejection of technological advancement in digital payment systems.
