Abstract

Research on two-phase flow in microchannels has developed rapidly and been applied in various industrial fields, focusing on the unique characteristics of gas-liquid two-phase flow, including the influence of changes in cross-sectional area and rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids on flow patterns and pressure drop. This research was conducted with an experimental approach involving direct observation of two-phase flow behavior on a micro-scale. The gas working fluid used was nitrogen, and the liquid working fluid used was XG (Xanthan Gum) with a concentration of 0.1%. The superficial velocities of gas (jG) and liquid (jL) were varied in the range of 0.66 - 20 m/s and 0.1 - 1 m/s. The characteristics of the flow pattern formed were recorded by using a high-speed camera and analyzed by using the image processing method with the MATLAB application. The characteristic of the flow patterns was observed in the present study, including the length and velocity of a gas slug. The flow patterns that were obtained in this study are bubbly, slug-bubbly, slug, and slug-annular. At the same superficial velocity of gas and liquid, non-Newtonian fluids have higher slug velocities and shorter slug gas lengths compared to Newtonian fluids. The experimental data shows that the pressure drop increases by the jL.
