Abstract

Claybrick waste remains an environmental issue in Bali as its amount increase annually. Being icon representing Balinese Traditional Architecture, the demand for claybricks in Bali is always high. Creative application of clay brick is a growing trend, alongside efforts to repurpose its waste as material component. However, this is disproportionate to the clay depleted supply as its main material, along with diminishing interest in preserving claybrick craftmanship. Recycling claybrick waste into interlock brick form innovation can boost interest on recycled claybrick, simultaneously reducing claybrick waste in Bali. Interlocking form implementation can reduce the mortar use while increasing the recycled claybrick bonding strength. This research focuses in finding recycled claybrick formula that can be innovated into interlock brick; and conducted on claybrick and clay content in Tulikup. This research uses qualitative and quantitative approach and Design Thinking methods to formulate user need through field observations, interviews with construction material researchers, manufactures and craftsmen; also material experiments to find the composition of recycled claybricks and its ability to be explored in term of forms and tectonics. This innovation is expected to reduce volume of claybrick waste, while enhancing interest on claybrick production and innovation.
