Abstract

Back pain is one of the most common complaints experienced by pregnant women, especially during the third trimester. The increasing size of the uterus shifts the body's center of gravity forward, causing postural changes such as lumbar lordosis that contribute to back pain. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of pregnancy exercises and prenatal yoga in reducing back pain among third-trimester pregnant women and to compare the effectiveness of both interventions. A quasi-experimental study with a two-group pretest-posttest design was conducted involving 18 third-trimester pregnant women experiencing back pain. Participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The independent variables were pregnancy exercises and prenatal yoga, while the dependent variable was back pain intensity measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test and Mann–Whitney test with a significance level of 0.05. The Wilcoxon test results showed significant reductions in back pain after pregnancy exercises (p = 0.000) and prenatal yoga (p = 0.000). The Mann–Whitney test demonstrated a significant difference in effectiveness between the two interventions (p = 0.027). Mean rank analysis indicated that prenatal yoga (22.17) was more effective than pregnancy exercises (14.83) in reducing back pain. In conclusion, both pregnancy exercises and prenatal yoga are effective non-pharmacological interventions for reducing back pain in third-trimester pregnant women, with prenatal yoga showing greater effectiveness.
