Abstract

Adolescents’ intensive use of social media is not always accompanied by adequate understanding of digital ethics, account security, and cybercrime risks. This community service program aimed to strengthen students’ digital literacy as a non-penal approach to cybercrime prevention at SMA Advent Kota Jayapura. The program employed participatory education through pre-test, thematic education, case discussions, simulations, post-test, and follow-up recommendations. Materials covered digital ethics, personal data and account security, phishing, one-time passwords (OTP), and other cybercrime risks. The pre-test involved 30 students and the post-test 27 students; therefore, results were analyzed descriptively at the group level. The mean percentage of correct responses increased from 68.01% to 74.09%. Six of ten indicators improved, while four declined. The largest increases concerned understanding the limits of reusing digital content, rising by 28.9 percentage points, and phishing recognition, rising by 28.5 percentage points. These findings indicate selective rather than uniform improvement in students’ understanding. Digital literacy education is therefore relevant as a preventive measure, but repeated case-based learning, matched pre- and post-test participants, and follow-up assessment are needed to strengthen weaker areas and evaluate knowledge retention and longer-term application of safer digital practices. This approach also enables schools to identify topics requiring further educational reinforcement.
