Abstract

Most Indonesian household waste is still discarded without separation at source, and limited waste literacy among children helps perpetuate this practice. This community service programme aimed to build waste sorting knowledge, attitudes, and behavioural intentions among children of RW 02, Kelurahan Pancoran, South Jakarta, through a workshop combining expert presentation with “Bumi Hero”, a student-developed digital sorting game. Twenty-nine children, mostly in grades 4–6, joined the half-day programme delivered by eight lecturers and thirteen student volunteers of Sampoerna University. Effectiveness was evaluated with pre- and post-questionnaires measuring knowledge, attitudes, and open-ended understanding. Knowledge scores rose from 2.31 to 3.69 out of 4 (57.8% to 92.2% correct; normalised gain 0.81; p < .001; Cohen’s d = 1.14), already-high attitudes persisted, and open responses shifted toward accurate three-stream classification and concrete sorting intentions. Game-based community education offers an effective, replicable model for early waste sorting socialisation.
