Abstract

Introduction: Iron-deficiency anemia remains a health problem among women of reproductive age, including prospective brides. Knowledge about anemia and patterns of iron-rich food consumption are factors that may be associated with hemoglobin levels and preconception health readiness. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge and iron-rich food consumption patterns and the incidence of anemia among prospective brides in the working area of Jeulingke Community Health Center. Methods: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design. The population and sample consisted of 57 prospective brides selected using total sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test. Results: Of 57 respondents, 22 (38.6%) had abnormal hemoglobin levels and 35 (61.4%) had normal hemoglobin levels. A total of 34 respondents (59.6%) had poor knowledge and 23 (40.4%) had good knowledge. Twenty-six respondents (45.6%) had suboptimal iron-rich food consumption patterns, while 31 (54.4%) had optimal patterns. Knowledge was significantly associated with hemoglobin levels (p=0.000; OR=35.538; 95% CI=4.266–296.082). Iron-rich food consumption patterns were also significantly associated with hemoglobin levels (p=0.030; OR=3.354; 95% CI=1.101–10.222). Conclusion: Knowledge and iron-rich food consumption patterns were significantly associated with the incidence of anemia among prospective brides in the working area of Jeulingke Community Health Center.
