Abstract

This study is motivated by the areca nut trade, which serves as a key economic activity for the community of Nipah Panjang II Urban Village, Nipah Panjang District. In practice, these transactions involve farmers, traders, and collectors, encompassing processes such as price determination, quality inspection, weighing, and payment. The study aims to examine the areca nut trading practices within the Nipah Panjang II community and analyze them from the perspective of Islamic business ethics. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation. Research informants included areca nut farmers (sellers), traders or collectors, and supporting informants knowledgeable about the trade practices in the area. The findings reveal that the trading process involves several stages: preparation of the areca nuts, handover or collection of goods, quality inspection, weighing, price determination, agreement, and payment. Challenges identified include price fluctuations, limited access to market price information, discrepancies in quality assessment, and issues regarding the weighing process. From the perspective of Islamic business ethics, the trading practices generally reflect principles of honesty, justice, trustworthiness, openness, responsibility, and mutual consent (tarāḍin); however, certain aspects require improvement—specifically regarding price transparency, weighing accuracy, and clarity regarding product quality. Consequently, the consistent application of Islamic business ethics is essential to ensure that the areca nut trade is conducted fairly and honestly, ultimately benefiting both sellers and buyers.
