Abstract

Sugarcane smut caused by Sporisorium scitamineum is an important disease of sugarcane that can cause significant yield losses and has been a constraint to sugar production in Indonesia since the mid-20th century. This study aimed to characterize variations in smut symptom characteristics under field conditions, describe the relationship between disease incidence and cultivation factors, and map the spatial distribution of the disease using a Geographic Information System (ArcGIS). The study was conducted from September to November 2025 in Semarang, Magelang, and Purworejo Regencies using a survey method with transect sampling. Observations included symptom characterization, disease incidence assessment, microscopic identification of teliospore morphology, environmental data collection, and interviews regarding cultivation practices. Spatial data were analyzed using ArcGIS to describe the diseases distribution pattern. The results showed variations in sorus morphology and disease incidence among observation sites. All samples exhibited teliospore morphological characteristics consistent with S. scitamineum. Humidity and plant age showed strong negative correlations with disease incidence, whereas temperature showed a weak and non-significant negative correlation. Among cultivation factors, the ratooning cycle was associated with higher sugarcane smut incidence. These findings indicate that the development of sugarcane smut is associated with environmental conditions, plant age, and cultivation practices, particularly ratooning practices.
