Abstract

Library facilities and infrastructure play an essential role in supporting the School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah; GLS) by providing reading resources and an environment that encourages students’ literacy development. This study aimed to describe the availability, condition, and utilization of library facilities in implementing GLS, as well as identify challenges in their use. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation of library facilities and literacy activities, then analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings showed that the library provided essential literacy facilities, including textbooks, non-textbook collections, bookshelves, reading tables and chairs, and other supporting resources. These facilities supported GLS through regular library visits, reading activities, and the integration of library materials into classroom learning. Although GLS had been implemented consistently at the basic level, several challenges remained, including limited library space, unequal distribution of reading materials, administrative management constraints, and the absence of dedicated librarians. To address these issues, the school implemented collection development, facility improvement, strengthened library management, and collaboration with external partners. Overall, the availability of library infrastructure effectively supported GLS implementation, although continued optimization of facilities, collections, access, and management is necessary to ensure sustainable and effective literacy activities.
