Abstract

Background: Visual impairment can result from the effect of ethambutol during tuberculosis treatment. Ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy is a well-known complication with manifestations include painless loss of central vision. Case: This case presents a middle-aged female with vision loss less than one month. She is diagnosed with tuberculosis and six-months use of ethambutol as part of an anti-tuberculosis regimen. Color vision and visual field were decreased. After discontinuing ethambutol, the visual acuity and optic nerve function improved after five months. Conclusion: Awareness of visual loss due to ethambutol use as part of the anti-tuberculosis drugs is essential while taking care of tuberculosis patients. An immediate cessation could improve visual function. Keywords: toxic, optic nerve, tuberculosis, vision, ethambutol
