Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Bacterial keratitis, accounting for 90% of microbial keratitis cases globally, poses a serious threat to vision and is a leading cause of corneal blindness globally. This study provides novel insight and integrated analysis of bacterial keratitis at the National Eye Center, providing epidemiological insight in a tertiary eye center, which has not been previously reported in published literature to guide effective clinical decision making and public health strategies. Methods: This descriptive retrospective study was done at the National Eye Center. Data on demographics, presenting signs and symptoms, bacteriological examination results, treatment administered, and complications observed were collected from medical records between January to December 2023. Result: Among 33 patients, 51.5% were female with a mean age of 41.6 years. The majority (81.8%) had predisposing factors, with corneal trauma (48.5%) being the most common. Microbiological analysis by corneal scraping revealed gram-positive cocci in 72.7% of cases. Most patients (78.8%) were managed with topical antibiotics alone. Surgical intervention was required in 21.2% of cases due to complications. Conclusion: The findings highlight corneal trauma as the leading risk factor, predominantly gram-positive cocci involvement, and the necessity of timely intervention to prevent complications. Further large-scale studies are needed to refine management strategies.

Abstract

Introduction: Color blindness, or color vision deficiency, is an eye condition that can reduce quality of life. Tinted contact lenses have been researched as a potential tool for correcting color blindness. Methods: This review aims to identify the effectiveness of color blindness aids and devices for patients with color vision deficiency as an alternative to enhance their quality of life. Article searches were conducted through electronic databases Google Scholar and PubMed using the keywords “color vision deficiency device,” “color blindness device,” and “color vision deficiency management.” Inclusion criteria included articles published between 2018-2023, full texts, writing in English, alignment of titles with abstracts, and validity of research methods. Results: The literature search yielded 98 articles; 8 articles met the inclusion criteria. Analysis of these 8 articles showed that color blindness devices and aids provide subjective new color perception and interpretation for color-blind individuals, but the objective effectiveness of these tools was not significant. Conclusion: The importance of public awareness of color blindness and the importance of developing more effective color-blind tools and devices. Further research is needed to develop color blindness devices and aids.

Abstract

Abducens Nerve Palsy is the most common ocular motor nerve palsy because the abducens nerve runs a long course from the brainstem to the lateral rectus muscle. Abducens Nerves palsy can result from several etiology; common etiologies of abducens palsy in adults include vascular disease, inflammation, tumours, and trauma. Therefore, early diagnosis is essential for some conditions that cause sixth nerve palsy. The purpose of this paper is to describe an isolated sixth nerve palsy as a first manifestation of Nasopharyngeal Malignancy. A 46-year-old female came to Cicendo Eye Hospital complaining of double vision from one month earlier, which would disappear if one eye was closed. The patient was diagnosed with Right Eye Abducens Nerve Palsy, which was suspected to be caused by ischemic then was asked to do an ischemic blood test and referred to an Internal Medicine Specialist. Three months after symptoms appeared, the patient returned to the clinic without any improvement and underwent a CT scan of the head with contrast and found an intracranial mass, suspected Nasopharyngeal Malignancy. Abducens nerve paralysis can be the first manifestation of a dangerous disease such as nasopharyngeal malignancy, so it takes awareness from every clinician when finding such cases. Abstract

Introduction: Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the orbit that affects orbital fat, extraocular muscles, periocular tissue and lacrimal glands. TED activity can be assessed with a Clinical Activity Score (CAS) to identify active or inactive TED conditions. Dry Eye Diseases (DED) is one of the manifestations in patients with TED with a prevalence that varies from 27%-96%. The Asia Dry Eye Society (ADES) 2017 proposed a new concept for DED diagnosis and therapy, namely Tear Film Oriented Diagnosis (TFOD) and Tear Film Oriented Diagnosis Therapy (TFOT) with Tear Film Breakup Pattern (TBUP) examination. TBUP examination help in determine specific management of DED. The aim of this study is to determine the differences in TBUP in TED patients based on active and inactive. Methods: This is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. The subjects were TED patients who came to the Cicendo Eye Hospital and met the inclusion criteria. The study was conducted at the National Eye Center of Cicendo Eye Hospital in April - June 2022. The data were analysed with the Chi-Square Test. Result: This study was conducted on 23 patients or 46 eyes. This study found a statistically significant differences in TBUP features in active and inactive TED patients (p=0.0001). The most common features of TBUP was found in active TEDs was dimples (55%). Conclusion: There are differences of TBUP features in active and inactive TED patient.
