Abstract

Indonesian society is characterized by religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity, which may serve as social capital as well as a potential source of conflict if not properly managed. Multicultural social education is therefore essential to foster tolerance and social harmony. However, studies on multicultural education have predominantly focused on formal education, while the role of pesantren has received limited scholarly attention. This study aims to analyze the role of Pondok Pesantren Shofa Marwa Jember as a foundation for multicultural social education in a plural society. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving pesantren leaders, teachers, students, and community members. The findings reveal that values of tolerance, mutual respect, togetherness, and social care are internalized through students’ collective life, the integration of religious and formal education, and pesantren religious traditions. These results indicate that pesantren function as contextual social education institutions that are highly relevant to strengthening multicultural education.

Abstract

The existence of Islamic boarding schools has been recognised as the oldest form of Islamic education in Indonesia. The global era has prompted Islamic boarding schools to undergo transformation in several aspects, including the curriculum. This research aims to describe how Islamic boarding schools transform their curriculum to develop students' competencies in the global era while maintaining the local traditions that have long been applied in Islamic boarding school learning. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. The research location was chosen at the Darul Musthofa Assunniyyah Lumajang Islamic boarding school. The findings show that the curriculum transformation at the Darul Musthofa Assunniyyah Lumajang Islamic boarding school has opened itself up to the formal education system, where there are junior high schools and high schools as found in other modern Islamic boarding schools. Curriculum transformation has also been implemented in the learning process at the pesantren with a tiered system, namely awaliyah (basic level), Ibtida' (intermediate level), and samawi (advanced level). Level achievement targets have also been applied to the learning process. The development of students' competencies is not only carried out through learning activities at each level, but also in habitual activities using a classical model that maintains the learning culture practised by the boarding school's supervisors. The challenge of curriculum transformation experienced by the Darul Musthofa Assunniyyah Lumajang boarding school lies in the issue of teaching human resources. Therefore, this This opens up opportunities for further research related to human resource development capacity in pesantren.

Abstract

Globalization has brought significant social, economic, technological, and cultural changes to Islamic educational institutions, including pesantren as the oldest form of education in Indonesia. These changes require pesantren to undertake institutional adjustments in order to remain relevant and competitive without losing their scholarly identity. This study aims to examine the institutional dynamics of pesantren in the global era by focusing on the challenges of institutional restructuring and educational innovation as adaptive strategies. The research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method, drawing on academic books, reputable national and international journal articles, and relevant policy documents published over the last seven years. The findings indicate that pesantren face various institutional challenges, including tensions between tradition and modernity, limitations in human and financial resources, and pressures to adapt to national educational regulations and standards. The direction of institutional restructuring tends toward strengthening more systematic, professional, and value-based governance while maintaining the central role of the kiai’s leadership. Furthermore, educational innovation in pesantren is manifested through the integration of religious and general knowledge within the curriculum, the utilization of digital technology in learning processes, and the strengthening of institutional networks and collaborations.
