Abstract

Students residing in Islamic boarding schools are required to adapt to a new environment characterized by distinct rules, activities, and social interactions. This study aimed to examine differences in personal adjustment based on grade level among female students at the Al-Arsyadi Samboja Islamic Boarding School. A total of 99 female students were selected as the sample using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected using the Personal Adjustment Scale for Students (PASS), based on Schneiders' (1955) theory. Data analysis involved One-Way ANOVA and Post Hoc Tukey tests using SPSS version 26.0. The results revealed a significant difference in personal adjustment based on grade level among the female students (F = 730.363; p = 0.000). Post Hoc Tukey test results indicated significant differences across all grade groups, with mean personal adjustment scores of 56.93 for the Early Tsanawi class, 71.93 for the Tsani Tsanawi class, and 87.74 for the Tsalis Tsanawi class. These findings suggest that the higher the student's grade level, the better their personal adjustment ability. This difference is likely linked to the students' experience and the duration of their stay in the boarding school environment; students at higher levels tend to be more accustomed to the rules, activities, and social demands of the pesantren setting. The study implies that the boarding school administration needs to provide more intensive attention and support to students at the entry level to ensure an optimal personal adjustment process.
