Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' mathematical reasoning ability in solving word problems about Linear Equations of One Variable (LEOV). Mathematical reasoning is an important skill in mathematics learning, but students often face difficulties, especially in providing logical justification. This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design involving 28 eighth-grade students. Data were collected through tests, interviews, and observations, and analyzed using descriptive statistics supported by qualitative analysis. The results showed that students' reasoning mathematical ability was in the medium category, with an average score of 14.86 out of 32. The distribution showed that 57% of students were in the medium category, while 21% were in the high and low categories. Indicator analysis showed that proposing conjectures (2.13; 53.25%), establishing mathematical relationships (2.11; 52.75%), and drawing conclusions (2.09; 52.25%) were in the medium category, while providing logical reasoning (1.45; 36.25%) was in the low category. These findings indicate that students are generally able to understand problems and perform calculations, but still struggle to explain their reasoning logically and systematically. Therefore, learning strategies that emphasize the reasoning process, such as encouraging students to justify their answers and explain their thinking, are needed to improve mathematical reasoning skills.
