Abstract

Music is one of the ways people communicate, and it can express messages and emotional experiences through lyrics and the visuals in music videos. This study aims to examine the portrayal of messages about love that is one-sided and toxic relationships in songs created by Billie Eilish. This study uses a qualitative approach with the semiotic analysis method by Roland Barthes, which includes the meanings of denotation, connotation, and myth. The research focuses on six songs: The Greatest, Birds of a Feather, Wildflower, Watch, When The Party Is Over, and Happier Than Ever. The research data is analyzed using the lyrics and visual elements found in the song and music video. Research shows that unrequited love is shown through hope, waiting, emotional dependence, fear of losing someone, anxiety, and inner conflict caused by unbalanced feelings. Meanwhile, toxic relationships are shown through emotional imbalance, ignoring a partner's needs, manipulating feelings, one-sided sacrifices, control in the relationship, and losing self-respect. In mythological terms, research shows there is criticism against the idea that sacrifice and suffering are signs of true love. This research concludes that Billie Eilish's songs are not just for entertainment, but also serve as a way to communicate, reflecting the reality of romantic relationships while highlighting the importance of awareness, emotional boundaries, and self-respect in building healthy relationships.
