Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of speaking skills among fifth-grade students during Indonesian language lessons at SD IUT Miftahul Huda Padang. Observations during the learning process revealed that most students were not actively expressing opinions, asking questions, or answering the teacher's inquiries. Furthermore, students struggled to construct coherent sentences while speaking; some appeared hesitant, lacked confidence, and used unclear intonation and volume when delivering answers. This study aimed to describe the improvement in students' speaking skills through the use of the debate method in the fifth-grade class at SD IUT Miftahul Huda Padang. A mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative) was employed, specifically utilizing classroom action research. The study was conducted over two cycles comprising a total of three sessions, involving 20 fifth-grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, questionnaires, documentation, and speaking skill assessment sheets. Regarding the observed aspects, the teaching module achieved a score of 82% in Cycle I and 96% in Cycle II; the educator's performance scored 76.5% in Cycle I and 97% in Cycle II; and student performance scored 70% in Cycle I and 94% in Cycle II. Additionally, the average mastery rate for speaking skills rose from 66.5% in Cycle I to 84% in Cycle II. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of the debate method effectively improved the speaking skills of fifth-grade students at SD IUT Miftahul Huda Padang.
