Abstract

Speaking skills are a fundamental aspect of language learning that functions as the primary means of communication, the expression of ideas, and the development of students' self-confidence in elementary schools. However, classroom realities indicate that many learners experience psychological barriers such as shyness, anxiety, and a lack of courage when speaking in public. This study aims to describe the improvement of speaking skills, analyze teacher and student activities, and determine student learning responses through the application of the storytelling model assisted by hand puppet media. This research is a Classroom Action Research conducted in two cycles using a descriptive-qualitative approach with ten fifth-grade student subjects. Data collection techniques utilized learning outcome tests, activity observation sheets, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the percentage of students' classical speaking skill completeness increased from 70% in the first cycle to 80% in the second cycle. Teacher and student activities consistently achieved a very good category with an average acquisition of 100%. In addition, questionnaire results showed that most students felt happy and helped in improving their courage to speak. The conclusion of this study is that the application of the storytelling model assisted by hand puppet media has proven to be effective in improving students' speaking skills in elementary schools.
