Abstract

This study aimed to develop a contextual scientific-based pop-up book, analyze its effect on improving students’ knowledge, and describe its practicality as a disaster mitigation education medium for fifth-grade students at SDN Salatuhur, Serang Regency, Banten Province. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model, consisting of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The subjects were 23 fifth-grade students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, expert validation questionnaires, student and teacher response questionnaires, and pretest-posttest assessments. Data were analyzed qualitatively using descriptive analysis of directions, criticisms, feedback, and suggestions from expert validation and response questionnaires, and quantitatively using the paired-samples t-test and N-Gain test. The results showed that: (1) the pop-up book was developed through needs analysis, design, expert validation, and limited trials, with feasibility scores of 89.5% for media, 82% for materials, and 97% for language, categorized as highly feasible; (2) the media significantly improved students’ knowledge, as indicated by p = 0.000 < 0.05 and an N-Gain of 0.63 or 63.34%, categorized as moderate; and (3) student responses averaged 84.93%, categorized as highly practical. Thus, the contextual scientific-based pop-up book is feasible, effective, and practical for disaster mitigation education in elementary schools.
