Abstract

This study examines the socio-ecological utilization of forest waqf by exploring how waqf land can be transformed into a conservation-based productive forest that promotes environmental sustainability, sociopreneurship (social entrepreneurship), and community empowerment. A qualitative case study was conducted at Yayasan Pendidikan Sosial dan Ma'arif (YPM) Sidoarjo, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and institutional document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis supported by methodological triangulation. The findings indicate that forest waqf generates integrated socio-ecological value by enhancing biodiversity, strengthening conservation practices, and increasing environmental awareness. It also supports sustainable livelihoods through green micro-enterprises, particularly value-added coffee production, while inclusive benefit-sharing mechanisms reinforce community participation and institutional sustainability. The study proposes a cyclical model of forest waqf utilization that integrates conservation, productive use, community empowerment, and reinvestment. This study enriches the Islamic social finance literature by positioning forest waqf as an innovative and scalable instrument for linking environmental conservation with socio-economic development. The proposed model provides practical insights for waqf institutions and policymakers in optimizing waqf assets to support sustainable development and community resilience in developing countries.
