Abstract

Migrant children in Malaysia often depend on community-based learning centers for education, everyday health, and environmental learning. Health literacy can help children understand why hygiene practices matter, while Islamic values can give these practices religious meaning, but understanding does not always lead to regular action. This study examines how health literacy and Islamic values relate to hygiene and environmental practices among migrant children at the Pantai Dalam Learning Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A qualitative case study was conducted from September to November 2025 with ten children aged 7–12, two educators, and two parents. Data were collected through observation, field notes, interviews, and documentation. Children’s average observation score increased from 1.3 at the beginning of the study to 3.6 in November. They became better able to explain the health reasons for handwashing, cleanliness, careful water use, and waste disposal, while ṭahārah and amānah connected these practices with Islamic teaching. Repeated activities and educator examples accompanied more regular practice, although two children showed slower change and home practices were less consistent. Regularity also depended on adult examples, routines, and available facilities. Non-formal learning centers should combine health explanations, Islamic values, repeated practice, and suitable facilities.
