Abstract

This study analyzes temperature distribution and gas-flow velocity in a 150 kg/batch natural-draft fixed-grate municipal solid waste incinerator using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in ANSYS Fluent 2023 R1. The numerical model activates the energy equation, standard k-epsilon turbulence, P1 radiation, Species Transport, and the Discrete Phase Model. Primary and secondary air inputs are 0.170 kg/s and 0.073 kg/s, respectively, while mesh independence is evaluated over several grid densities before the main simulation. The results show mass-weighted average temperatures of 1637.15 K in the primary chamber, 1169.62 K in the secondary chamber, and 1058.23 K at the outlet. Average velocity increases from 0.795 m/s in the primary chamber to 2.437 m/s in the secondary chamber and reaches 23.443 m/s at the outlet. The highest thermal zone is concentrated in the primary chamber, whereas flow acceleration occurs downstream due to secondary-air momentum and changes in cross-sectional area. Local recirculation appears in the secondary chamber, and outlet backflow is associated with the pressure-outlet boundary and the incomplete chimney geometry. These results show a coupled thermal-flow pattern that can support further optimization of air distribution and incinerator geometry.
