Abstract

Dysmenorrhea remains a highly prevalent menstrual disorder among young women and is closely linked to psychological factors such as anxiety, particularly in final-year students facing academic pressure. This study aimed to analyse the association between anxiety level and the occurrence of dysmenorrhea in sixth-semester D-III Midwifery students at STIKes Sehati Medan. An analytical survey with a cross-sectional design was conducted between June and August 2025. The population comprised 39 students, from which 30 respondents were selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using two structured questionnaires (10 items each) covering anxiety symptoms and dysmenorrhea complaints, and were analysed univariately and bivariately using Fisher's Exact Test at α = 0.05. Results showed that 20 respondents (66.7%) were classified as anxious and 10 (33.3%) as not anxious, while 21 (70.0%) reported dysmenorrhea and 9 (30.0%) did not. Cross-tabulation indicated that 18 of 20 anxious respondents experienced dysmenorrhea, compared with only 3 of 10 non-anxious respondents. Fisher's Exact Test yielded p = 0.002, indicating a significant association between anxiety and dysmenorrhea. The findings suggest that anxiety management should be considered a complementary strategy to reduce dysmenorrhea among midwifery students.
