Abstract

This study investigates how husbands maintain relationships while imprisoned at the Class II A Curup Correctional Institution, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. The data were gathered through in-depth interviews with incarcerated husbands and their wives, as well as a correctional officer. The data were then analyzed through Anthony Giddens’ Structuration theory. The study finds three main patterns in fulfilling maintenance obligations: utilizing family businesses or productive assets, receiving financial support from extended family members, and wives becoming primary income providers. Interestingly, the willingness and involvement of the husband’s extended family in providing financial support show how kinship networks can sustain households and collectively assume responsibilities. Nevertheless, although women become the primary income providers in sustaining household maintenance, husbands retain their legal and social status as heads of household even while serving prison sentences.  This pattern demonstrates the resilience of Islamic legal norms on male household authority while also revealing a shift in how economic responsibilities are practically distributed within the family.
