Abstract

Plastic waste poses a persistent environmental problem due to its slow natural decomposition in many Indonesian villages, including Sikui Village, Teweh Baru District, North Barito Regency. This article describes a community empowerment program addressing this problem through ecobrick production, in which plastic waste is sorted, cleaned, and compacted into used bottles to create a reusable material. The program was carried out with members of the PKK (Family Welfare Movement) using a participatory approach involving observation, socialization, direct practice, mentoring, and discussion. In addition, the KKN program also included free tutoring for elementary school students and educational sessions on preventing radicalism, criminality, and bullying, both intended to broaden community empowerment beyond waste management. Results show that the ecobrick program increased community understanding of plastic waste sorting and reuse, with concrete outcomes reflected in one additional temporary waste disposal site (TPS) and the installation of five anti-litterering signs in the village. These outcomes indicate that community based waste management, linked to local waste regulations, can encourage more sustainable waste handling practices. The program demonstrates that community empowerment activities designed around local environmental needs and implemented through active participation can support long term improvements in village waste management in Sikui Village
