Abstract

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of the functional reception of the Qur'an within society, specifically the use of certain verses for the purpose of *tabarruk* (seeking blessings). The research focuses on the practice of reciting Surah At-Talaq verses 2–3—commonly known as the "Thousand Dinar Verse" (*Ayat 1.000 Dinar*)—by the Al-Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Student Alumni Association (*Ikatan Keluarga Santri*) in Wonosobo. This practice represents a *pesantren* (Islamic boarding school) tradition maintained by alumni amidst the dynamics of their socio-economic lives. This is a field research study employing a qualitative-sociological approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with community administrators and members, and documentation. Karl Mannheim’s Sociology of Knowledge theory was utilized to analyze the expressive, objective, and documentary meanings of the practice, alongside the "Living Qur’an" approach. The results indicate that the practice—carried out consistently, both individually and collectively during routine gatherings, following specific procedures (*kaifiyah*) authorized by the *pesantren* leader—holds three dimensions of meaning for the alumni community: (a) Objective Meaning, viewed as an obligation to fulfill a teacher's recommendation; (b) Expressive Meaning, serving as a source of inner peace and a means to seek abundant sustenance (an economic solution); and (c) Documentary Meaning, acting as a cultural identity that distinguishes the Nurul Iman alumni community from others. The social impact of this practice includes strengthened solidarity among alumni (mechanical solidarity) and the creation of collective spiritual support in facing life's challenges in the Wonosobo region.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretations of Ibn Kathir and M. Quraish Shihab regarding the *tabayyun* (verification) verses in the Qur’an, examine the differences in their approaches to the ethics of information production and validation, and explain the relevance of the *tabayyun* concept to modern society in the digital communication era. The research focuses on Surah Al-Hujurat (6), Surah Al-Isra’ (36), Surah An-Nur (15–16), and Surah Al-Ahzab (70) as the foundation for communication ethics and information validation from a Qur’anic perspective. A qualitative approach utilizing library research methods was employed. Primary data sources were *Tafsir Ibn Kathir* and *Tafsir Al-Misbah*, while secondary data were obtained from relevant books, scholarly journals, undergraduate and graduate theses, and academic documents. Data collection was conducted through documentation and literature review. Data analysis utilized descriptive-analytical methods and a comparative exegesis (*tafsir muqaran*) approach to compare the interpretations of the two exegetes regarding the *tabayyun* verses. Data validity was reinforced through source triangulation and the analysis of relevant literature. The findings indicate that both Ibn Kathir and Quraish Shihab regard *tabayyun* as a crucial principle in information validation and Islamic communication ethics. Ibn Kathir places greater emphasis on the validity of the chain of transmission (*sanad*), the credibility of news sources, and a narrative-based (*riwayat*) approach to safeguarding the veracity of information. In contrast, Quraish Shihab emphasizes contextual aspects, the social responsibility of communication, and the relevance of information ethics to modern life. The concept of *tabayyun* in both commentaries holds significant relevance to digital communication issues such as hoaxes, social polarization, and low media literacy.

Abstract

The integration of local culture into science education remains a critical yet underexplored strategy, particularly in pesantren-based schools where religious and academic values intersect. The study identified several ethnoscientific values embedded in the Dero pilgrimage route, particularly those related to ecological components, biodiversity, ecological interactions, and environmental stewardship. Employing a quantitative associative approach with an ex post facto design, data were collected from 66 students of SMA Takhassus Al-Qur’an using questionnaires measuring Dero pilgrimage participation and religious attitudes, together with a written test assessing ecosystem concept understanding. Two separate simple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between Dero pilgrimage participation and each outcome. The analyses showed significant positive relationships between Dero pilgrimage participation and religious attitudes (r = 0.858, R² = 0.737, p < 0.001) and between Dero pilgrimage participation and ecosystem concept understanding (r = 0.839, R² = 0.704, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that the Dero pilgrimage may provide a meaningful context for connecting cultural experiences, religious values, and Biology learning in pesantren-based education, while the observed relationships should not be interpreted as causal effects. This is an open-access article under the CC BY-SA license
