Abstract

This study examines the role of community support in religious education strategies and the formation of religious identity within interfaith families in Wonosobo, Central Java, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with three interfaith families (Made: Hindu-Catholic-Muslim; Budi: Catholic-Muslim; Roso: Hindu-Muslim), their children, and religious figures (Aida, Muchlisun). The findings indicate that community support, manifested through gotong royong (mutual cooperation), shared values, and inclusive religious educational institutions, plays a critical role in facilitating religious education and religious identity formation. Community acceptance of symbolic rituals, non-discriminatory participation in socio-religious activities, and collaborative approaches between religious figures and families create an environment that fosters the development of children's religious identities. This study demonstrates how Paul Knitter’s theory of pluralism manifests in practice, where religious differences serve as a space for mutual learning rather than a barrier. It contributes to the understanding of how community dynamics can cultivate religious harmony in a pluralistic society, offering practical implications for religious education policy, community development, and interfaith dialogue. The study is highly relevant to the Southeast Asian context, where religious diversity coexists with strong community bonds.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of the functional reception of the Qur'an within society, specifically the use of certain verses for the purpose of *tabarruk* (seeking blessings). The research focuses on the practice of reciting Surah At-Talaq verses 2–3—commonly known as the "Thousand Dinar Verse" (*Ayat 1.000 Dinar*)—by the Al-Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Student Alumni Association (*Ikatan Keluarga Santri*) in Wonosobo. This practice represents a *pesantren* (Islamic boarding school) tradition maintained by alumni amidst the dynamics of their socio-economic lives. This is a field research study employing a qualitative-sociological approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with community administrators and members, and documentation. Karl Mannheim’s Sociology of Knowledge theory was utilized to analyze the expressive, objective, and documentary meanings of the practice, alongside the "Living Qur’an" approach. The results indicate that the practice—carried out consistently, both individually and collectively during routine gatherings, following specific procedures (*kaifiyah*) authorized by the *pesantren* leader—holds three dimensions of meaning for the alumni community: (a) Objective Meaning, viewed as an obligation to fulfill a teacher's recommendation; (b) Expressive Meaning, serving as a source of inner peace and a means to seek abundant sustenance (an economic solution); and (c) Documentary Meaning, acting as a cultural identity that distinguishes the Nurul Iman alumni community from others. The social impact of this practice includes strengthened solidarity among alumni (mechanical solidarity) and the creation of collective spiritual support in facing life's challenges in the Wonosobo region.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of Quranic literacy among adults in Garung Urban Village, Garung District, Wonosobo Regency. Although the majority of the population is Muslim and the area possesses adequate religious infrastructure—comprising three mosques and eleven prayer rooms—adult participation in Quranic learning activities stands at only around 20 percent of the total population. The study aims to: 1) examine the state of Quranic literacy among adults in Garung Urban Village; 2) identify the factors hindering Quranic literacy among adults in the area; and 3) discover strategies to enhance Quranic literacy among adults in Garung Urban Village. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach viewed through the "Living Qur'an" perspective. Primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews with nine informants—including adult residents, religious leaders, community figures, and administrators of Quranic educational institutions—conducted on June 18–19, 2026. Secondary data were obtained from documentation and the "Garung District in Figures 2025" report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model, involving the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study concludes that strengthening Quranic literacy among adults requires a humanistic and contextual approach, as well as synergy among religious institutions, families, peer communities, and the local village government.
