Abstract

This study fills a gap in the literature regarding how tradition-based tourism performances can serve as a medium for preservation and as a space for negotiation between cultural authenticity and the demands of tourism commodification. Two of the research member are traditional performing arts practitioners, therefore the observation method used is participatory observation, supported by in-depth interviews and literature review. Participatory observation was conducted on the performance activities of the tourism package at the Sonobudoyo Museum. In-depth interviews were conducted with artists, creators, and academics. Literature review was conducted to find data on traditional performing arts, entertainment arts, and art preservation. This study found both positive and negative impacts of organizing arts entertainment packages for tourism. The positive impact is seen in the number of artists who are regularly involved, creating a good regeneration process for traditional artists, and providing benefits for wayang topeng craftsmen. The negative impact is seen in the inconsistency between preservation efforts and the performances presented, especially in terms of the quality of authenticity. Further research is needed, particularly regarding tourist responses to the performances offered by these art tourism packages. This study fills a gap in the literature regarding how tradition-based tourism performances can serve as a medium for preservation and as a space for negotiation between cultural authenticity and the demands of tourism commodification.
