Abstract

Coco fiber is one of the natural sources of cellulose in Indonesia whose potential has not been utilized optimally. This study aims to determine the effect of temperature and time of bleaching process using peracetic acid (PAA) on the characteristics of cellulose produced, as well as to determine the best combination of temperature and time for bleaching process with PAA to produce coco fiber cellulose. This study used a randomized block design with two factors, that were temperature (60°C, 80°C, 100°C) and time (30 minutes and 60 minutes). Variables observed were yield, whiteness index, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and continued with Duncan's multiple comparison test. The results showed that temperature of bleaching process had a very significant effect on yield, whiteness index, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content of coco fiber. The time of bleaching process had a very significant effect on whiteness index, cellulose, hemicellulose, also lignin content, and had a significant effect on yield of coco fiber. The interaction between temperature and time of bleaching process had a very significant effect on whiteness index, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content, but had no significant effect on yield content of coco fiber. The best treatment to produce cellulose was obtained by using PAA at a temperature of 100°C and a time of 60 minutes. The characteristics were 35.38±0.32% yield, 84.77±0.81% whiteness index, 83.14±0.22% cellulose, 6.60±0.51% hemicellulose, and 4.23±0.55% lignin.

Abstract

Ecoenzyme is a product of fermentation process that can be used as disinfectant, biocompose, and surface cleaner. In general, ecoenzyme production use organic waste, glucose, and water which fermented for 3 months in anaerob condition before harvested. This research intended to determine the effect of brown sugar addition on characteristics of ecoenzyme from pineapple peels. This research using completely randomized design with single treatment. The treatment in this research was addition of brown sugar in different ratio. Brown sugar addition of pineapple peels consist of 6 level which are 0:6 ratio; 1:6 ratio; 2:6 ratio; 3:6 ratio; 4:6 ratio; and 5:6 ratio of brown sugar. Variables observed in this research are alcohol contain, pH, and total dissolve solid. The result of this observation indicate that brown sugar addition affected alcohol contain, acidity, and total dissolve solid of ecoenzyme from pineapple peels. Ecoenzyme has higest alcohol contain on day 8 and decresed on day 10. Addition of 4:6 brown sugar ratio was the best treatment with 6,83±0,60% (v/v) alcohol contain, 3,74±0,05 pH, and 7,23± 0,55 total dissolve solid value.

Abstract

Herbal tea is a tea that is not made from tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) but is made from raw materials of flowers, leaves, seeds, roots or dried fruits that are usually healthy and don’t contain caffeine. One of the ingredients used in making herbal tea is lemongrass. The purpose of this study is to know the effect of the initial temperature of brewing on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of lemongrass tea and determine the initial temperature of brewing in producing lemongrass tea with the best physicochemical and sensory characteristics. The initial temperature of brewing which consists of five levels, namely 60ºC, 70ºC, 80ºC, 90ºC and 100ºC. The results showed that the initial brewing temperature treatment greatly affected the physicochemical and organoleptic characteristics. The higher the initial brewing temperature treatment, the resulting lemongrass tea with the best physicochemical and organoleptic characteristics, the initial temperature treatment of brewing 100ºC resulted in a total phenolic characteristic of 0.46±0.02 mg GAE/g, IC50 antioxidant activity of 1,284.75±12.55, water soluble essence of 10.32%. brightness level (L*) 14.56±0.18, reddish level (a*) 8.89±0.19, yellowish level (b*) 12.00±0.37. The best products selected from the sensory assessment were with a color score of 3.1±0.64 (yellowish green to green), a taste score of 3.6±0.75 (a bit bitter to bitter), an aroma score of 4.2±0.77 (lemongrass-scented to very lemongrass-flavored), and an overall reception of 5.65±1.14 (somewhat like it to like).

Abstract

Onggok is tapioca solid waste that contains high cellulose reach 15% to 30% but has not been used appropriately. This study aimed to determine the concentration of NaOH and TCA in producing the best CMC characteristics of onggok. The study used a factorial randomized block design. The first factor was the concentration of NaOH (15%; 30%; and 45%), and the second factor was the concentration of TCA (10%; 20%; and 30%). The observed variable included degree of substitution, yield, water content, NaCl content, and purity of CMC. The results showed that the concentration of NaOH and TCA significantly affected the degree of substitution, yield, water content, viscosity, and purity of CMC. The concentrations of 45% NaOH and 30% TCA produced the best CMC characteristics with yield, moisture content, degree of substitution, viscosity, and CMC purity of 1.13±0.12, 22.86±0.15%, 9.57±0.53%, 170.00±10.00cPs, and 99.14±0.40%, respectively.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the addition of glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent and glycerol as a plasticizer to produce chitosan hydrogel with the best characteristics. This study used a factorial Randomized Block Design with three treatment factors: the addition of glutaraldehyde (1gr, 2gr, and 3gr w/w) and the addition of glycerol (1gr, 2gr, and 3gr w/w). The variables observed were thickness, adsorption, tensile strength, and elongation at break. The results showed that added glutaraldehyde and glycerol significantly affected thickness, adsorption, tensile strength, and elongation of chitosan hydrogel. Based on the result, the best characteristics of the chitosan-glutaraldehyde-glycerol hydrogel are shown with the addition of 3 gr glutaraldehyde and 1 gr glycerol, which as value of 0.288±0.005 thickness, 1403.13±200.51 adsorption, 1.49±0.03 tensile strength, 26,64±0.21 elongation at break.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of tween 80 and span 80 combination on the characteristics of the kenikir flower dye extract encapsulate and determine the best combination of tween 80 and span 80 to produce kenikir flower dye extract encapsulates. This study is a one-factor experiment using a simple randomized block design with a combination treatment of tween 80 (T) with span 80 (S), to achieve HLB values of 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. Each treatment was carried out three times to get 18 units. The data obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance and if treatment affects the observed variables, it was continued with Duncan's Test. The results showed that the combination of tween 80 and span 80 as an emulsifier affected the water content, total carotenoids, surface carotenoids, encapsulation efficiency, brightness level, redness level and yellowness level and had no effect on the yield and solubility of the encapsulated extract of kenikir flower dye extract. Based on the effectiveness index, the combination of HLB 9 (Twen 80 0.18g and Span 80 0.32g) was the best combination to produce an encapsulate of kenikir flower dye extract with the characteristics of 78.54% yield, 5.57% water content, 90.43% solubility, total carotenoids. 27.59%, surface carotenoids 0.64%, encapsulation efficiency 97.70% with brightness (L*) 35.92, redness (a*) 24.23 and yellowness (b*) 32.48.
