Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thinking, perception, emotion, and behavior, requiring continuous antipsychotic therapy. Long-term medication use may increase the risk of Drug-Related Problems (DRPs), which can affect treatment effectiveness, increase the occurrence of adverse effects, and reduce patients’ quality of life. Objective: This study aimed to identify the occurrence of DRPs based on the Cipolle classification among patients with schizophrenia at Soeprapto Mental Hospital, Bengkulu Province, during January–December 2025. Method: This study employed an observational approach using a retrospective descriptive design through medical record review. The sample consisted of 169 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were selected using purposive sampling. DRPs were identified based on the Cipolle classification. the use of medications that are not in accordance with indications, the need for additional therapy, administration of doses exceeding requirements, and administration of doses below requirements. The data were analyzed descriptively and presented as frequencies and percentages. Result: The results showed 7 occurrences of DRPs. The identified categories were unnecessary drug therapy with 3 occurrences (1.78%), need for additional drug therapy with 3 occurrences (1.78%), and dosage too high with 1 occurrence (0.59%), while no occurrence of dosage too low was identified (0%). Conclusion: Drug-related problems were still found among patients with schizophrenia. Periodic therapy evaluation through collaboration among healthcare professionals, particularly pharmacists, is needed to improve the rational use of medicines, treatment effectiveness, and patient safety.
