Abstract

The use of styrofoam as food packaging can cause environmental problems due to its low biodegradability and the presence of hazardous compounds. This study aims to develop biodegradable foam based on bagasse cellulose (Saccharum officinarum) and sago starch with the addition of chitosan. Bagasse is utilized as a filler because of its high cellulose content of 53%, while sago starch functions as the matrix. Chitosan is added to improve mechanical properties and reduce water absorption. The production of biodegradable foam begins with the isolation of cellulose from bagasse through delignification using NaOH and bleaching using H2O2. The cellulose is then mixed with sago starch, chitosan, PVA, glycerol, and magnesium stearate, followed by molding using the thermopressing method. The resulting product is evaluated based on tensile strength, water absorption, and biodegradability. This study is expected to provide scientific information on the effects of varying chitosan concentrations and starch-to-cellulose ratios on the quality of biodegradable foam and support the development of safer and more biodegradable packaging materials.
