Abstract

Composites are engineered materials resulting from the combination of two or more different materials, each possessing its own advantages. Waru tree bark fibers (Hibiscus tiliaceus) have significant potential as natural reinforcement in composites, especially after undergoing alkali treatment. Furthermore, molasses possesses good adhesive characteristics to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of composites when applied as an additive in the resin matrix. However, the combined use of waru fiber and molasses in polyester resin is still rarely studied. This research aims to investigate the effect of molasses addition to BTQN 157 polyester resin in three variations (3%, 5%, and 7%), as well as the effect of fiber immersion duration in 6% NaOH solution (for 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours) on the bending strength of the composite. Specimen preparation utilized the ASTM D790 standard with dimensions of 120mm in length, 12mm in width, and 4mm in height. The results showed that the highest bending strength reached 67.7 MPa at a composition of 15% fiber, 80% resin, and 5% molasses after 2 hours of immersion. This indicates that the addition of molasses and the immersion time significantly affect the mechanical strength of the composite.

Abstract

Technological developments in industrial fields such as materials have certainly encouraged the search for sustainable composite material alternatives, especially from renewable natural resources. One such effort is the use of natural materials as composite material reinforcements. This study aims to determine the effect of molasses addition and the optimal combination of molasses addition and immersion time using (NaHC03) on bending strength for application in car dashboards. The testing process involved bending tests with molasses additions of 3%, 5%, and 7% and immersion times (NaHC03) of 5, 6, and 7 hours. The bending test specimens referred to the ASTM D-790 standard. The results of this study showed that the highest bending strength value obtained was 66.1 MPa with 5% molasses addition, and the best combination of molasses addition and (NaHC03) immersion time was 5% addition with an immersion time of 5 hours. The results of this study indicate that the addition of molasses and the soaking time of the fibers affect the mechanical strength of the composite. Based on the BSAPI standard for bending tests, the results obtained from this study can be used for car dashboards made of ABS High Impact plastic, which has a strength of 37-76 MPa.

Abstract

Pandanus tectorius leaf fiber exhibits considerable potential as a natural reinforcement material for biocomposites owing to its high cellulose content and robust fibrous structure. This study aims to investigate the influence of NaOH alkalization treatment on the tensile strength of biocomposites fabricated from BQTN polyester resin reinforced with Pandanus tectorius fibers. The experimental parameters include NaOH concentration (0%, 5%, and 10%), immersion time (3 hours and 5 hours), and fiber volume fraction (10% and 15%). Tensile tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM D638 standards, and the data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pareto diagrams. The results revealed that the untreated composite exhibited the highest tensile strength, with an average value of 30.47 MPa at a 15% fiber volume fraction. Conversely, the alkali-treated specimens demonstrated a reduction in tensile strength with increasing NaOH concentration and immersion duration, reaching the lowest value of 19.60 MPa at 10% NaOH for 5 hours. ANOVA results indicated that fiber volume fraction had the most significant effect on mechanical performance, followed by NaOH concentration and immersion time. These findings suggest that the optimization of alkalization parameters is crucial to enhance fiber–matrix interfacial bonding without significantly compromising the overall mechanical properties of the composite.

Abstract

Waterjet propulsion is a propulsion system used on various water transportation, such as speedboats and amphibious vehicles. This technology works by drawing water through an inlet at the bottom of the vessel and then expelling it at high speed through a nozzle to generate thrust. Water vehicles that use Waterjet Propulsion such as Jet Skis, use waterjets for faster and more agile maneuvering movements, fast patrol boats used by the military and police for fast operations in shallow and narrow waters, fast ferries use this technology for fuel efficiency and high speed, amphibious assault ships used by the military to land troops and heavy vehicles on the beach, fast cruise ships use waterjets because they have minimal vibration and are smoother compared to conventional propellers. The advantages of waterjet propulsion compared to conventional propellers are its ability to operate in shallow waters, better maneuverability, high speeds with better efficiency. Based on these advantages, this research aims to design an innovative twin waterjet propulsion system. Where the waterjet propulsion is equipped with an inlet section that functions to increase thrust. The main components, which include the outlet, inlet, and impeller, are made using 3D printing technology with Ethylene Propylene Acrylate Polylactic Acid Carbon Fiber (EPA PLA CF) material. Tests were conducted to investigate the performance of waterjet propulsion on a laboratory scale using an electric motor at three rotational speeds: 2,500 rpm, 3,500 rpm, and 5,000 rpm. The test results showed a linear increase in thrust, with values ??of 3 N at 2,500 rpm, 6 N at 3,500 rpm, and 9 N at 5,000 rpm.
