Abstract

Surface roughness is a key indicator of the quality of turned components. This study aims to determine the effect of tool nose radius, feed rate, and their interaction on the surface roughness of SUS 304 stainless steel in CNC turning. A 2 × 3 factorial experiment was conducted using nose radii of 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm and feed rates of 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 mm/rev, with three specimens per combination (18 specimens in total). Turning used a Mori Seiki CNC lathe at a cutting speed of 100 m/min and a depth of cut of 1 mm, and the arithmetic mean roughness (Ra) was measured with a surface roughness tester. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA at a 5% significance level. Nose radius, feed rate, and their interaction significantly affected Ra (p < 0.05). The 0.8 mm radius produced smoother surfaces than the 0.4 mm radius, and the highest roughness (2.908 µm) occurred at 0.4 mm and 0.20 mm/rev. However, the lowest roughness (0.834 µm) was obtained at 0.8 mm and 0.15 mm/rev rather than at 0.10 mm/rev, deviating from theoretical prediction. Nose radius should therefore be selected together with feed rate.
