Abstract

This study examines the concept of spatial geometry implicitly contained in traditional pottery handicraft products of Banyumulek, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, as part of an ethnomathematical study based on Sasak culture. Three pottery products were analyzed: flower pots, drinking cups, and candle holders which respectively represented the shape of a cube space, an upright tube, and a rectangular limas. The research uses a descriptive-exploratory qualitative approach with ethnographic methods; Data was collected through direct measurements using a steel ruler (1 mm accuracy), observation, and in-depth interviews with the interviewees. Each geometric shape is systematically verified against all its formal geometric requirements. The results showed: (1) the flower pot was proven to be cube-shaped with ribs and ; (2) drinking glasses are proven to be in the form of an upright tube; ) with quantitative evidence of consistency of 7.2 cm in diameter at two different measurement points; (3) the candle place is proven to be in the shape of a rectangular limousine() with verified data using Pythagoras' Theorem, the difference between theoretical and measured bevel ribs ( only . The findings confirm that Banyumulek craftsmen intuitively applied the principles of geometry to build spaces through hereditary traditions without formal education, and Banyumulek pottery has great potential as an authentic, contextual, and meaningful geometry learning medium for students.
