Abstract

This study aimed to determine the responses of several large chili pepper varieties (Capsicum annuum L.) to whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) infestation as an alternative environmentally friendly pest management strategy. The study was conducted in Paya Bujok Blang Paseh, Langsa Kota District, Langsa City, from July to September 2025, using a non-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) involving several large chili pepper varieties. Observations were made on the percentage and intensity of whitefly infestation at 37, 44, 51, and 58 days after planting (DAP). The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test when significant differences were detected. The results showed that the varieties had no significant effect on the percentage of whitefly infestation at any observation period. Regarding infestation intensity, significant differences among varieties were found only at 44 DAP (p 0.05), with Tanjung-2 showing an infestation intensity of 4.07%, which was lower than that of Branang (6.36%). Meanwhile, infestation intensity at 37, 51, and 58 DAP did not differ significantly among varieties (p 0.05). Tanjung-2 exhibited lower infestation intensity at 44 DAP; however, it cannot yet be classified as the most resistant variety based on all parameters and observation periods. Trichome density and leaf thickness are presumed to be associated with varietal responses, but further investigation is required.
