Abstract

Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) pose risks that may outweigh their therapeutic benefits, particularly in geriatric patients with chronic diseases, multiple medical conditions, and polypharmacy. This study aimed to determine PIM incidence based on the 2023 Beers Criteria and examine its associations with gender, age, number of medications, and number of comorbidities. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using prospectively collected data. Participants were selected through purposive sampling according to predetermined inclusion criteria. Medical record data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Most patients were male (58%), aged 60–74 years (83%), received ≥5 medications (94%), had one comorbidity (53%), and attended the Neurology Clinic (57%). PIMs occurred in 58% of patients, with one PIM being the most common finding (35%). Category 1 predominated (85%), while ketorolac (18%) and diclofenac sodium (17%) were the most frequently used PIMs. No significant associations were found between PIM incidence and gender (p = 0.793), age (p = 0.940), number of medications (p = 0.682), or number of comorbidities (p = 0.237). Nevertheless, PIMs affected most patients, highlighting the need for appropriate identification and monitoring of medication use.
