Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the association between the intensity of e-cigarette use and respiratory disorder symptoms among adolescents using e-cigarettes at coffee shops in Gampong Ateuk Pahlawan, Banda Aceh City. The study used a quantitative analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of adolescent e-cigarette users whose number was not known with certainty. Data were collected using a questionnaire, and the analyzed dataset contained 96 valid respondents. Univariate analysis was used to describe respondent characteristics, e-cigarette use, and respiratory symptoms, while bivariate analysis used the Pearson Chi-Square test. The results showed that 71 respondents (74.0%) were aged 20–24 years, 46 respondents (47.9%) had a bachelor-level education, 45 respondents (46.9%) were in the light e-cigarette-use category, 42 (43.8%) were in the moderate category, and 9 (9.4%) were in the heavy category. A total of 53 respondents (55.2%) experienced respiratory symptoms. Cross-tabulation showed respiratory symptoms in 46.7% of respondents in the light-use category, 71.4% in the moderate category, and 22.2% in the heavy category. The Pearson Chi-Square test produced p=0.008, indicating a statistically significant association between e-cigarette-use intensity and respiratory symptoms in this study population. The findings provide local evidence that can support health promotion, respiratory-risk education, and healthier management of e-cigarette use in adolescent social environments such as coffee shops.
