Abstract

The development of this PCAP-based scientific literacy assessment instrument aims to comprehensively measure students' scientific literacy skills, particularly in optics and light. This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Expert validation was conducted to assess the instrument's quality in terms of content, construction, language, and writing. The quality test includes validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power. The instrument was trial-tested with 120 students recruited from three Islamic Senior High Schools (Madrasah Aliyah). The expert validation results indicate that the instrument has good quality, with average scores of 3.84 (instruction aspect), 3.60 (item construction), and 3.23 (language aspect). The validity test confirms that all items are valid (r-value > r-table 0.361; p-value 0.000 < 0.05). The instrument's reliability is very high (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.936). The difficulty level analysis shows that most items are moderate, while the discriminating power analysis proves the instrument effectively differentiates between high- and low-ability students. These findings confirm that the developed PCAP-based assessment instrument is of good quality and suitable for use in science learning. The assessment results can guide teachers in designing targeted learning strategies to foster students' scientific literacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine students’ scientific literacy skills through the implementation of STEMQ-based e-modules assisted by Flipbook technology on the topic of Optical Instruments at MA Al Ihsan Kalijaring, Jombang. The research was motivated by students’ low scientific literacy skills, limited digital learning media, and the insufficient integration of technology in physics learning. A quantitative approach with a one-shot case study design was employed. The sample consisted of 30 eleventh-grade science students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a scientific literacy test consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions based on the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP) indicators: scientific inquiry, problem solving, and scientific reasoning. Data analysis used descriptive quantitative techniques and the Shapiro–Wilk normality test. The findings revealed that the mean post-test score was 80.76, categorized as good. The achievement percentages for scientific inquiry, problem solving, and scientific reasoning were 79.87%, 81.33%, and 81.07%, respectively, all within the good category. The normality test showed a significance value of 0.064 (>0.05), indicating normally distributed data. Furthermore, the paired sample t-test result (p = 0.000 < 0.05; t = -9.441) demonstrated that STEMQ-based Flipbook e-modules significantly improved students’ scientific literacy skills.
